Discover Debrigarh Nature Camp at the confluence of Eastern Ghats & Hirakud Wetland. Explore tropical forests, rich biodiversity, and accessible wilderness.
Situated at the westernmost extreme of Odisha in eastern India, Debrigarh Nature Camp stands as a critical ecological haven and a premier destination for nature lovers. The sanctuary boasts a unique geographical identity, nestled at the vibrant confluence of the Chotanagpur Plateau and the Eastern Ghats.
This distinct topographical intersection shapes its rich landscape, which is predominantly characterized by dense thickets of tropical dry deciduous forests interspersed with sprawling bamboo brakes. Flanked on one side by the districts of Sambalpur and Bargarh, its other side is embraced by the voluminous and widespread Hirakud Wetland, an expansive aquatic ecosystem covering approximately 650 square kilometres.
Beyond its immediate boundaries, Debrigarh Sanctuary plays an indispensable role in regional wildlife conservation due to its extensive network of natural forest corridors. These green pathways seamlessly link Debrigarh to several other prominent protected areas across state lines, ensuring safe passage for various species.
To the west, a dedicated forest corridor connects Debrigarh to the Gomarda Sanctuary in Chhattisgarh. In the southwest, it links with the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary, which itself adjoins the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve.
To the east, the vital Sambalpur-Athmallik forest corridor bridges Debrigarh with the Satkosia Tiger Reserve. This eastern highway is famously utilized by elephant populations migrating between the Athmallik-Sambalpur forests and Debrigarh.
In addition to its ecological significance, Debrigarh is highly accessible, blending wilderness with convenient connectivity. This balance of robust biodiversity, critical migratory corridors, and effortless accessibility establishes Debrigarh Sanctuary as a shining jewel in India’s conservation landscape.
