Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a vibrant landscape where the Chotanagpur Plateau meets the Eastern Ghats. Flanked by the Sambalpur and Bargarh districts on one side and the massive, 650 sq. km Hirakud Wetland on the other, Debrigarh is a pristine wilderness defined by distinct seasons and rich biogeographic diversity.

The Great Meadows: A Lush Green Carpet

At the heart of Debrigarh lie its magnificent meadows—vast, sweeping tracts of grassland dotted with scattered trees, shrubs, and slender, whispering bamboo.

• Nearly 7% of the Sanctuary has been transformed into thriving meadows.
• More than 61 Species of Grass form a lush green carpet that acts as the primary life-support system for the region’s wildlife.

Why the Grass Matters?

Grass is the ultimate superfood for our wildlife. It is rich in carbohydrates and fiber, packed with fructose and cellulose, and loaded with the essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals crucial for the survivability of the sanctuary’s species. For major grazers and browsers like the Gaur (Indian Bison), Elephants, Chital, and Sambar, these meadows are an all-day buffet. These magnificent animals spend up to 18 hours a day walking, foraging, and feeding across these fertile lands.

A Confluence of Diverse Habitats

Debrigarh’s unique geographical location allows for an amazing diversity of landscapes and natural habitats. The sanctuary is dominated by dense thickets of tropical dry deciduous forests interspersed with hardy bamboo brakes.

The Canopy & Flora

Standing tall within the meadows and forests are fruit-bearing trees and iconic regional flora that provide crucial shade, food, and resting spaces for animals. Some of the most common and vital tree species you will see include Sal, Bheru, Dhaura, Kurei, Asana, Moi, Bija, Salai, Charu, Barabakulia, Karada, Salia, Bamboo.
